LOCATION - Choose a location that you can see from your home. Preferably the kitchen window, breakfast room or the family room if that is where you spend the majority of your time. FLOW - It is vital that the water flows toward your home. Water is energy, energy is money, and you want that all flowing toward you, instead of away from you! SIZE - Bigger is better if the space allows. Most clients choose to add on to their water garden after a year or so, or add another pond because the joys are so abundant. SUN OR SHADE - Either will work, if you love water lilies and lotus blooms then choose a sunny location. If your entire yard is trees, then the shady location will be just right for you. The challenge with trees comes in the fall when cleaning out the leaf collection from your skimmer can be a daily event. HOW DEEP? - The depth of your water garden should be over two feet. We typically excavate the center for a fish cave that has a large flat flagstone on top. DO THE FISH SURVIVE? The fish can over winter in a safe nook away from any ice, and herons and raccoons cannot reach them. Fish go dormant or hibernate like a bear when the water temperature lowers to around 50 degrees. Their system shuts down and they do not eat. If they are fed, the food stays in their digestive system and may rot. So slowly wean your fish from their favorite activity as the weather cools. OBSERVE NATURE – God is creative with stream beds and pond edges. Be sure to mix up the stone sizes and locations to keep it looking natural. Natural is the key to believable. My designs are meant to look as if the home was build around and incredibly beautiful water source out back. STONES – Be sure to use weather field stones or non limestone products. The stones you find on the edge of the road are not safe for fish. They will create too much alkaline in the water. PRODUCTS – You may purchase great Aquascape products from your local water garden store like Best of Nature. You will also find their staff very knowledgeable about plants and fish too. ENJOYMENT – There is nothing like a water garden for creating a nourishing sense of peace. Relax and enjoy the ride.
